Acqua di Genova cologne was created in 1853 by perfumer Stefano Frecceri for the Royal House of Savoy. Within a very short time, the fragrance enjoyed growing popularity and soon became an indispensable part of the morning routine of many royal families: several European noble and royal families of the time used the cologne with great passion.

Two people in particular contributed to its widespread popularity and appreciation – Virginia Oldoini and King Vittorio Emanuele II. Virginia Oldoini, the Countess of Castiglione, was considered one of the most beautiful women in Europe at the time and was known for her appearance, charm, and style, serving as a role model for both women and men. She fell in love with Acqua di Genova – and thus inspired many others to use it. King Vittorio Emanuele II was so enthusiastic about the cologne that on March 28, 1866, he granted Stefano Frecceri the Royal House's Award and appointed him as an official purveyor to the court.

From this point on, the triumphant advance of Acqua di Genova cologne was unstoppable: It made its way around the world, garnering numerous awards and prizes to this day. And it still has a few brothers and sisters today – the line has been expanded to include several other, equally sophisticated fragrances.
