…Beauty delights the eye, but scent fascinates the soul… Is it truly superficial or foolish to take care of oneself? Highlighting one’s own physical, intellectual, or moral qualities can sometimes make us appear vain and superficial, making it all seem wrong—even though it isn’t. For Epico, vanity is like a theatrical performance: it means looking, becoming accustomed to observing, immersing oneself, and contemplating. No one would be vain if they could not see themselves—and, above all, if they could not be seen. Vanesia is the expression of an inner language that does not seek to impress, but rather fascinates through its simplicity. In this opera, the first two performers are bergamot and yellow mandarin, which stand out immediately—through their role as light as well as their energy and freshness. And, like in the theater, the iris becomes the soundtrack that accompanies the entire piece. It begins slowly, with a light introduction that nevertheless gives the other "characters" space to unfold—like the delicacy of violet and the vibrancy of ginger. But as the work reaches its climax, the iris enters the stage and grows, becoming increasingly present—supported by an orchestra of cedarwood, musk, and tonka bean, which envelop and sustain it. The work—a declaration of love to one’s own vanity—ends with a dominating iris: delicate, sweet, and deeply fascinating to the soul.
