4 Rue Lepic – Paris It is 3:00 a.m. – exactly the moment when you need courage. The moment when you feel alone and face what lies ahead. Everything seems like an insurmountable mountain. Your heart beats faster, anxiety grows. You pace restlessly around the room, look out, see the streetlights, some of which are flickering – even they seem unable to hold their ground. A constant interplay of darkness and light. Darkness and light. 4:00 a.m. passes, then 5:00 a.m. – and you stare into the void until you hear the first chirping of the birds. The sun rises, the street gets loud – and the huge mountain begins to shrink. It is 6:30 a.m. You open the window to breathe in fresh air – and in that very moment, the scent of coffee from a small patisserie down the street drifts up to your nose. The mountain has vanished. For, whether you like it or not: coffee marks the beginning of a new day all over the world. The sun has risen – and that scent of coffee gives me the strength to carry on and start my life anew.
